ROC/Winston Campaign/CDP/Hooker Pop, September 27, 2009

R.O.C., Winston Campaign, Chaos, Disorder and Panic and Hooker Pop live at The Cobalt for Skate 'n Grind, September 27, 2009.

This show took place the day after the Subhumans show and was the first day of packing up things at the bar before it closed on the 30th. If you're visiting this gallery from an outside link, click on "Concerts 2009" up above and that'll take you to the other concert galleries.

There's also a bit of a tour of The Cobalt starting at photo #40 so twenty years from now you yet-to-be-born whippersnappers can log on to your super hyper Internet 5000 and see what Vancouver's Hardcore Bar was like back in the day.

Normally the woofers would be here.

The fire escape on the left and the men's washroom on the right. Normally there would be more art on the walls here, but most of it was taken down and I assume returned to its respective owners.

Lucky for you at home, you can't smell the awful smell wafting from either of the two washrooms.

A well-used inflatable doll. You can see it in action the previous night here:
The men's washroom at The Cobalt. This photo is here in full size, so if you want to read the graffiti, click on the photo, and then click on "O" for original size.
Apparently someone beat WendyThirteen at Scrabble and considered it brag-worthy. I guess beating her at anything and living to tell the tale is brag-worthy.
The remnants of the famous Cobalt stage, minus its sound system.

It just looks so wrong.

For the uninformed, the black flooring is actually rubber mats, kind of like what you see at hockey rinks. Very durable and very handy for when you fall down while moshing.
The other side of the stage. The "cyclists dismount" sign is covering up loose speaker wires. The four speakers on the stage are a temporary PA system for vocals only.

Speaking of speakers, one great feature of the Cobalt stage was that the stage monitors were mounted on the ceiling so they didn't take up space on stage and didn't get in the way of energetic moshing like at other venues.
Where the stage speakers used to be. A shame, really.
 • The Cobalt, September 27, 2009.

The back of the stage. That big rectangular space on the back wall is where the Cobalt banner used to hang. You can see the duct tape from countless bands hanging their banners over it.
The side of the stage where music gear is stored. It also doubled as a changing room for the many burlesque shows that were put on there by the Screaming Chickens.

The show posters used to be all nicely fixed to the wall. One of the fun things to do between sets was to go read the posters and chuckle at the stranger band names.

Also missing is a large poster of Joey Shithead Keithley which presided over The Cobalt much like a painting of the queen anywhere else.

Entrance area and pool/merch table.

As shown by the tricycle sculpture hanging from the ceiling and the amount of artwork around the room, The Cobalt was a regular haunt for many of the more creative minds in town.
 • The Cobalt, September 27, 2009.

The famous wall of Jagermeister bottles by the entrance. You have probably seen it in every second photo of WendyThirteen.
Bar on the left, stage on the right.

I'm fairly sure the padded pleather bar top is a remnant of the Cobalt's previous life as a strip bar.
 • The Cobalt, September 27, 2009.

The bar. The thing to the right of the fire bell usually has all sorts of blinky lights on it. The display cases on the left and right above the bar used to be full of all sorts of knickknacks. The karaoke song lists used to be on the wall to the right of the bar.
 • The Cobalt, September 27, 2009.
Alternate view of the bar.

That's the world-famous Mr. Chi Pig, another Cobalt fixture, wandering by the bar.
The back wall of the bar, facing the sound booth. There used to be a big screen TV against the wall between here and the sound booth.
 • The Cobalt, September 27, 2009.

The view from the back of the bar. Even from here the sight lines to the stage aren't bad which was why along with the great sound system and cheap beer, The Cobalt was one of the best pure show venues in town regardless of the event.
 • The Cobalt, September 27, 2009.

The sound booth where John the sound guy used to work his magic.

Detail of the sound booth, now empty.

View from the same corner as the women's washroom. The platform with the two pillars was a great place for shooting photos, though hot since the stage lights would be right above your head.
